Lavender provides direct representation, advocacy, and referrals, with a priority for serving those with low income and our LGTBQ youth. As LGBTQ people continue to experience disproportionate rates of poverty and violence, Lavender works to address the root causes of these issues through compassionate legal representation. We strive to provide a safe space for everyone in the LGBTQ community to access legal representation and related advocacy. Lavender is here to make sure that to the extent possible, the legal system does not serve as a barrier to those in the LGBTQ community.
During the 2022-2023 fiscal year, so far, Lavender Legal Center has served 58 LGBTQ Iowans including 40 legal cases, 7 advocacy cases, and 11 referrals. It is important to note that referrals take considerable time as they often must conduct research to help an individual find a professional that is both LGBTQ inclusive and knowledgeable. Also, of importance, these numbers are not sustainable with a staff of one attorney.
Lavender Legal Center is funded by grants and individual donations. To continue to serve the LGBTQ community and expand services to meet their needs, they will need program support. This grant will be used to sustain their current legal services and aid in expansion. Lavender Legal Center is diligently working towards adding a second attorney to their team.
